Main Street Vision...

Over the years, many studies have been conducted and projects proposed for Markham Village to sustain its heritage and enhance the quality of life of its citizens. As Markham continues to grow at a rapid pace, concern for the protection and enhancement of features that contribute to our sense of history and place is heightened. To address this concern, the Town of Markham, at the suggestion of the Mayor, has appointed the Main Street Markham Committee -- a committee of residents, environmentalists, Councillors and business owners interested in conserving and enhancing Markham Village.

Markham Farmers' Market

The Markham Farmers' Market opened in the spring of 2000 and has become an integral part of Main Street each Saturday. Each Saturday from May to September from 8 am to 1 pm, the Market features farm fresh products, baked goods, preserves, and flowers. Each week there is a special event and entertainment. Parkettes

The two parkettes on the east side Main Street, one just south of Robinson Street beside the Scotiabank and the other just north of Robinson Street between Birthwaves and Lions Den Bookshoppe.

The north parkette is known as the Church Street Parkette. The whole parkette was designed by Ken Hoyle of Harrington & Hoyle, landscape architects and features a modular garden sculpture by well known sculpturist, Ron Baird, park benches and a two-tier drinking fountain. The gothic style of the sculpture is in keeping with the Church Street theme and was designed to complement the surrounding architecture. This was completed in the fall of 2000. If you visit the new Loblaws at Bullock and McCowan, you will see a drawing of this gazebo on the back wall of the store.

The Joseph Street parkette was just completed this year. The round gazebo has a suspended top that is made of filigreed leaves. A very pleasant place to sit and reflect. It gives a feeling of spring and has lights surrounding it.

New Bus Shelters

Two new bus shelters which adhere to the Vision guidelines have been installed in front of the Post Office and adjacent to the Joseph Street parkette. These are a welcome addition, especially for the many seniors who live in the apartments surrounding Main Street.

Tannery Pond

Another initiative of the Main Street Committee has been redevelopment of the Tannery Pond. A project started by the late Paul Mingay, the Tanny Pond area is a beautiful strip of land to the west of Main Street running from Robinson Street north to Bullock Drive. To date, a boardwalk has been partially installed and will be completed in the spring of 2002. Crossing over a restored wetlands, two ponds and Robinson Creek, the boardwalk offers a sanctuary in the Village. A bridge, benches and signs will be installed in the spring as well.

The project is being funded by the Town of Markham with the assistance of a grant from the Federal Millennium Fund. After more than three-quarters of a century, Tannery Pond will once more become a focus point of our village. Come and enjoy a walk with nature!
